In music class, we come prepared to listen, participate and work together. These are the expectations for every student. In music class, students learn through music. Though there may be some written work, students learn and are assessed mostly through singing, playing instruments, dance, movement and other musical activities.

A student in the music class is expected to listen and watch in order to follow all directions. These directions may be given in words, gestures, signals or other ways. Students are expected to participate to the best of their ability in all music classroom activities. They are expected to work together as partners or in groups with the other students in their class.

All third grade students learn to play the recorder ( a small wind instrument) starting in January. All students in third and fourth grade must have a recorder. High-quality recorders are available for purchase through the school. Books are available also, but are not required. A letter will be sent home in mid-October with details.

All fourth and fifth grade students are involved in a choral concert as part of their music class. The fourth grade concert this year will beWednesday, January 13th at 7:00 PM. The fifth grade musical will be Thursday, May 27th, also at 7:00 PM. In addition, three fifth graders will be selected to perform with the Howard County Festival Chorus in May.
